25 AI Writing Red Flags: Phrases and Patterns to Edit Out
A checklist of the words, phrases and sentence patterns that make AI-assisted writing feel generic, with plain replacements for each.
These phrases are not proof that a machine wrote something. People use them too. But they appear so often in AI-assisted drafts that readers now treat them as filler. Editing them out makes almost any text sharper.

Transition overload
Stacking "Furthermore", "Moreover", "Additionally" and "Consequently" makes text feel assembled. Keep one per page at most. Use "Also", "And", "So" or start the next sentence directly.
Structural patterns
- The rule of three: every list has exactly three items.
- The balanced contrast: "It's not just X, it's Y."
- The summary paragraph: a closing paragraph that repeats the intro.
- Uniform length: every sentence is 18 to 25 words.
- Empty openers: "In conclusion", "Overall", "Ultimately".
- Hedging pile-ups: "may potentially help to some extent".
How to fix them quickly
- Search the draft for each phrase above.
- Delete first. If the sentence still works, you did not need the phrase.
- Replace with a plain word.
- Break up uniform runs of sentences.
- Add one concrete detail per section.

A caution about detectors
Seeing these patterns tells you a draft is generic, not who wrote it. Detectors built on similar signals produce false positives, particularly on non-native English writers. See how to detect AI-generated text for a method that does not rest on a single score.
Frequently asked questions
Is using these phrases bad writing?
Occasionally, no. The problem is density. One "moreover" is fine; five in a page is a tell.
Can a tool find these for me?
Yes. The AI text detector shows writing-pattern signals such as cliché density and sentence-length variation, as an estimate rather than proof.
Will removing them improve SEO?
It helps readability, which supports engagement. Rankings depend mostly on usefulness and originality.
Do other AI models use different phrases?
Somewhat, but the general pattern of stock phrases and uniform rhythm is shared across models.
