Natural: Balanced, human-sounding. This mode does not combine short sentences, or strip filler phrases or intensifiers.
Why Thesaurus Lookup Was Removed
Most paraphrasers reach for a thesaurus and hope. This one does not: WordNet-style synonym lookup was deliberately removed from the engine because picking lemmas across every sense of a word was the main source of nonsense output.
Hand-Checked Tables, One Direction Only
Instead the paraphraser works from hand-checked tables — 74 wordy-to-plain phrase patterns, 27 stock phrases, 30 synonym headwords, 25 nominalisation patterns — and it swaps in one direction only, from formal towards plain, never the reverse.
The 0.93 Similarity Gate on Every Swap
Individual word swaps must score at least 0.93 cosine similarity against the unswapped sentence using a local sentence-transformers model, and the finished sentence must clear the mode's own threshold, which runs from 0.78 in Casual to 0.88 in Academic.
How Many Words Each Mode Will Swap
At most two words per sentence are swapped in Natural mode, one in Professional, and none at all in Academic, Formal or Concise, where structural edits do the work instead.
